Liebster Award

I am so very honoured to accept the Liebster Award nomination from Sarah over at Raising Human Beans. Thank you Sarah. Be sure to head over to her blog and have a read about the Bean Family - unschooling, recipes, printables, her blog has a great variety of lifestyle topics.

So what is the Liebster Award.....

I'd heard of the Liebster Award over the last 12 months of blogging and have always wondered what it was all about. When I did a search after receiving the nomination, I stumbled onto The Global Aussie site, which is the current home of the Liebster Award.

The Liebster Award is believed to have started back in 2011 and it is an online-only award that is given to bloggers by other bloggers. The award is a great way to be discovered within the blogging world and also to connect with others within the blogging community. It really is a wonderful idea.

The word "liebster" is German in origin and means dearest, beloved or favourite. Knowing the mean of the word, I get a warm and fuzzy feeling knowing that my little blog has been nominated. There's no actual or virtual presentation and no trophy to display - I just have the privilege of being able to display the Leibster Award badge on my blog. That in itself is a great prize!

Now there are a few rules involved if you have been nominated for the award, so let's get them out of the way.
  1. If you have been nominated for The Liebster award AND you choose to accept it, write a blog post about the award. ✔
  2. Thank the person who nominated you, and post a link to their blog. ✔
  3. Display the Liebster Award badge on your blog. ✔
  4. Provide 10 random facts about yourself.
  5. Nominate 5 to 11 blogs that you feel deserve the award - they should be newish blogs with less than 200 followers.
  6. Provide your nominees with ten questions to answer.
  7. List these rules in your post (I copied and pasted from The Global Aussie, which you're allowed to do!)
  8. Inform the people/blogs that you want to nominate, that they have been nominated for the Liebster Award and provide the link to your blog so that they can learn all about the Liebster Award.
  9. Once you have completed the above steps, head on over to The Global Aussie and let Jack know that you've been nominated. Make sure to provide him with a link to your own post so that he can have a read of your nomination post!
Sarah has given me 5 questions to answer so I will answer those before giving you some random facts about myself!

Question 1: Why did you start blogging?
I started my blog last year as a means of clearing my mind of everything that we were experiencing on our autism journey. At the time of starting to blog, we were very new to the world of autism and we hadn't yet established support networks, other than L's therapy team. So blogging was a way of getting everything off of my chest and out into the open. I find a lot of calm in writing for my blog and this has helped me immensely to be able to think logically about decisions that we have had to, and have to make in the future, on behalf of both L and O.

For the future I hope that my blog becomes a place where new families can gain the much needed support that we all need as well as gaining new information about various facets of autism. I would also like my blog to be one that is able to spread autism awareness and acceptance.

Question 2: What kind of blog do you have?
I blog about my families journey with autism - the highs and the lows. I hope that my blog provides an insight into life with autism as well as spreading a little awareness and acceptance of autism.

Question 3: Where is your favourite place in the world that you have been?
This is a tricky one to answer as my favourite place in the world is anywhere where my family is! It probably sounds corny but as long as I am with my superhero family, I am set!

Question 4: If you could go anywhere, where would you choose?
I would love to take my husband and little superheroes to a little island called Ternate, which is located in the northern part of the Maluku province of Indonesia. I was an exchange student in Indonesia on Ternate when I was 15 and I would love to take my family to Ternate to meet my Indonesian family.

Question 5: If money wasn't an issue, would you still blog?
The short answer is yes! I don't blog to earn a living. It would be nice to be earn a living from my blog, but that is not why I started my blog in the first place. I enjoy writing, so that is enough of a reason to keep blogging. If in the future I am paid to blog, then that is a huge bonus!

1. I detest flying cockroaches with a passion. Cockroaches cause me to either run far, far away or freeze on the spot. I am an absolute wimp when it comes to these insects! I don't know what it is about flying cockroaches, but they give me the heebie jeebies!

2. I didn't get my ears pierced until I was in my 30's. I am not a huge fan of needles so the thought of having my ears pierced made me very queasy. When I did get them pierced, I made my husband come along and get one of his ears pierced for moral support!

3. I played the Alto Saxophone from the age of 11 through to the age of 18. Music was my escape. I have loads of wonderful memories of being in various bands, performing at many concerts and other performances.

4. I had my left foot operated on when I was 10 as I had bone and cartilage growing where it should not have been growing. Very not normal!

5. I can count to 10 in Indonesian, Croatian, Vietnamese, Portuguese, German and Italian. This is thanks to the huge cultural diversity of children at my work. Give me a few months and I'll be able to add Hebrew, Sudanese, Zimbabwean, Hindi, Burmese and a few other Indian dialects to this!

6. I have an autism heroes tattoo on my left wrist in honour of my little superheroes.

7. I carried the Olympic flame in the torch relay leading up to the Sydney 2000 Olympics. This was a huge honour and something that I am very proud of.

8. I was born with a tiny hole at the top of my right ear - called a preauricular sinus. Until very recently I had no idea what it was called! I now have a scar where it was due to constant infections in it.

9. I experienced a volcanic eruption when I lived in Indonesia as an exchange student. The volcanic eruption was an experience in itself - as a naive 15 year old I thought I was a goner for sure!

10. I love Stitch from the Movie "Lilo and Stitch!" One of my friends recently returned from a holiday in the USA and brought me a little Stitch figurine - OMG, THE BEST PRESENT EVER!!! I was jumping for joy when she handed the present to me!!

Now for my nominees! I'm going to do something a little different and tell you why I have nominated these blogs!

So in particular order, my nominees are:

Toni from over at Raising Miss Bow and Co. Toni started her blog this year (2017) and is also a special needs mum. The first post of hers that I read is titled "Seven Facts of a Special Needs Mum" and I was moved by it as I could relate to a number of points in her post.

Shell from over at The Sun Mama. Shell also has a special need child (mmm, seeing a pattern here!) I loved her post about their family trip to the Queen Creek Olive Mill during which their tour guide took the time to engage with her son.

Nicole from over at Raising an Extraordinary Person. Nicole is another newbie to the blogging world and is also a special needs mum - autism in fact! She has a great post about autism facts.

Joseph and Ashlee over at Insert Chaos Here. Joseph and Ashlee are new to the world of blogging and they write about the chaos that is life.

Tina over at No You Need To Calm Down! I love her post about teaching empathy to children.

And my questions for my nominees are....
1. When you have writers block, what do you do to work it out?
2. If you could be any superhero, who would it be and why? (One from L!)
3. Would you rather explore a deep ocean or outer space?
4. What is your favourite book?
5. What is the one fall back food that your child/children will eat?
6. Why do you blog?
7. What is your favourite animal and why? (One from O!)
8. What is the most extreme thing that you have ever done?
9. What are the most afraid of?
10. Finish this sentence -  I am the best version of me when.......

I look forward to reading your responses and seeing who you pass the love onto! Happy blogging!

Wow, another Blogger Recognition Award!

Imagine my absolute surprise and delight when I opened up my emails and saw that Dr. Elise Cohen Ho from over Ask Dr. Ho had nominated me for the Blogger Recognition Award. My second this year and my blog has not yet been around for twelve months.

I must admit that when I saw the email from Dr. Elise Cohen,I had to read the email several times to check that I was reading it right. The nomination made my heart sing! So thank you so much Elise, I really appreciate the nomination as it came completely out of the blue and made my day.

As I mentioned in my post for my first Blogger Recognition Award, I really am proud of how far my blog has come since August last year. I truly do feel blessed to be part of the blogging community. It is such a diverse community and the Blogger Recognition Award is a lovely gesture that shows appreciation to bloggers right round this wonderful world of ours.

There are a few rules that I do have to mention prior to accepting the award.
  • I have to thank the blogger who nominated me and provide a link to their blog. ✔
  • I have to write a post to show the award. ✔
  • I have to write a brief story of how my blog started. ✔
  • I have to give two pieces of advice to new bloggers. ✔
  • I have to select 15 other bloggers that I want to pass this award onto. ✔
  • I also have to comment on each of the 15 blogs to let them know that I have nominated them and provide them the link to this post. ✔

Why did I start my Blog?

I started my blog in August 2016 as a means of clearing my mind from all that we were experiencing on our Autism journey. At that stage we were 6 months into our official journey as we had received L's diagnosis in January 2016 and I had quite a lot on my mind. I wanted a little piece of the internet to clear my thoughts on and hence my blog was born.

As I have said in a previous post, writing for my blog acts like a soul cleansing - writing gets it all out there, there is nothing left for me to dwell on. I can mull it over while writing, analyse it while re-reading and editing the post, and then my mind is clear when I hit the publish button. Writing for my blog is like therapy!!

I have been asked why I chose the name "Raising My Little Superheroes" for my blog and the explanation is really quite simple - and there's absolutely nothing deep and meaningful to the explanation I am sad to say!

As a Mum I am raising both my children and in my eyes, they are both little superheroes. They have both been through so much in their short number of years. L's obsession is superheroes and O is also partial to watching superhero cartoons and television shows, so I figured that the name of my blog really explains what I do!

Being on an Autism journey can be quite a lonely experience. You truly do find out who your true friends are, those that understand and accept your children for who they are. I am sad to say that we have lost a few friends so far on this journey, but they are the ones who are missing out!

I truly hope that by sharing our experience, I am able to let other families know that they are not alone on this journey. An autism journey can be a positive experience, if you are willing to let it be. We have our fair share of rough days and I am happy to share these as well as the positive days - I want others to know that we understand and get what they are going through. I want others to know that support is there to those who want it.

Over the last 11 months I have come across many a blog that has been going for quite some number of years and I honestly hope that my blog will be one of those in years to come that inspire others to share their own story.

Looking forward my aim for my blog is raise awareness and acceptance of Autism and to educate others by sharing our families story. As I said in my first Blogger Recognition Award post I hope that my blog provides an insight into living life with two children on the Autism Spectrum as well as educates, inspires, and supports others who are also on this journey.

Advice for New Bloggers!

The first piece of advice that I have is to write with passion. When I first floated the idea of starting a blog to my husband, I was very clear in my mind about what I wanted to blog about - I wanted to share every facet of our autism journey. I have found that being passionate about your topic makes it incredibly easy to think of and write post ideas. I have come across many bloggers who write with passion, and it really shows in their writing. Passionate blogs are easy to read and they are the blogs that I constantly return to. They are the blogs that I want to keep up to date with. They are the blogs that I feel connected to!

The second piece of advice that I have is seek out and make some networks within the blogging community. The blogging community is so diverse - you name the topic, there is probably someone in this wide world who is blogging about it! And if you ask for advice, take it on board. The blogging community is here to support you!

Now this is the part I am looking forward to. I love visiting other people's blogs. I've yet to come across a blog that I haven't enjoyed reading and there are so many amazing bloggers who write with passion. I am going to do something slightly different this time as I am going to include why I want to pass the Blogger Recognition Award onto them!

So without any further ado and in no particular order these are 15 of my favourite bloggers.
  • Tasha over at Meldrums on The Move - this is one lady who knows her stuff! Have a read of the post about assisting on a community project in Kenya!
  • Doris from over at Sugar, Spice and All Things Autism - I love this post about helping our ASD children to reach for the stars.
  • Kelly over at It's a Tink Thing - Kel's daughter Tink, also has autism so I can relate to everything that she blogs about.
  • Meghna over at Love, Life and the Little One - I love her post about Dad's who are Rocking Fatherhood!
  • Jessie over at Two Little Homeschoolers - she has a great no cook playdoh recipe on her blog!
  • Sara over at Travels with Tots - I love all her reasons why she takes her little guy with her on her travels.
  • Grandi over at My Aggrandized Life - Have a read of the post about lessons in grace and courtesy.
  • Marissa over at Diytified - Marissa has some great DIY projects on her blog, like this DIY Growth Chart!
  • Rachel over at A Life with A Little - I love Rachel's post on the 5 things that she learnt from a self-care weekend. A must read!
  • Emma over at Mummy's Munchkins - I love her Ode to her Kids as I can relate to a lot of what she has penned!
  • Shawna over at Mish Mash Mommy - she has a great post up of 26 books to include in your toddlers library!
  • Lisa from over at A Life Less Ordinary - I love Lisa's post on the 5 reasons that her son's autism diagnosis has made her a better person.
  • Joseph over at Insert Chaos Here - this is a man who writes with passion and humour. This post about an encounter with a bee made me laugh!
  • Brandon over at Right Brained Mom - I love the post on the rock race track!
  • Megan over at Restless Meg - Her open letter to herself is very honest and powerful.

Blogger Recognition Award

I feel very honoured and excited to receive a Blogger Recognition Award from fellow bloggers Jimmy and Tina from over at Durham's Love Life and Travel.

This is the first time that my blog has been nominated for an award such as this, and although there's no presentation or a trophy to show for it, I am very proud of how far my little blog has come in a little over 8 months. I'm thrilled to bits that Jimmy and Tina feel that my blog is worthy of receiving this award.

I feel very blessed to be a part of the blogging community. The Blogger Recognition Award, to me anyway, is a lovely gesture to show appreciation to bloggers around this wonderful world of ours. I've never met Jimmy and Tina but I feel that I know so much about them just from their blog and their Facebook page.

There are a few rules that I do have to mention prior to accepting the award.
  • I have to thank the blogger, or this case bloggers, who nominated me and provide a link to their blog.

I started my blog in August 2016 as a means of clearing my mind from all that we were experiencing on our Autism journey and I thought that having my own little space on the Internet would be a great way to do this. When I began writing I honestly didn't think that anyone, other than my family and friends, would read my ramblings, but wouldn't you know it the page views slowly started climbing upwards. And it wasn't just my family and friends that were reading my blog! Writing helps me to relax, it is one of my hobbies that I can do day or night.

As I have said in a previous post, writing for my blog acts like a soul cleansing - writing gets it all out there, there is nothing left for me to dwell on. I can mull it over while writing, analyse it while re-reading and editing the post, and my mind is clear when I hit the publish button. I guess my blog is therapy for me!

Once I had published a few posts and started to receive some very positive feedback, I realised that through my blog I had the potential to share our experience with those that were also on an autism journey. When we began our autism journey it was a very lonely experience. I do hope that by sharing our experience, that I am able to let other families know that they are not alone on this journey, that having autism is not a bad thing, it can be a very positive experience if you let it be.

Now through my blog, I would like to raise awareness and acceptance of Autism, to educate others by sharing our families story. I hope that my blog provides an insight into living life with two children with Autism as well as educates, inspires, and supports others who are also on this journey.

Advice for New Bloggers!

When I began my blog I knew very little about the blogging world other than I knew exactly what I wanted to write about. I was very certain that I wanted to share every facet of our experience on our autism journey, from therapy to meltdowns to explaining the different aspects of autism as well as other disorders or issues that can be co-morbid with autism. I am very passionate about autism and do hope that this shows in my blog. One of the things that I have learnt in the last 8 months is that no matter what you want to blog about, whether it is food, travel, fashion, animals, parenting, crafts, if you write with passion and believe in what you publish then your readers will pick up on it. Blogging about something that you are passionate about makes it very easy to think of post ideas.

The second piece of advice that I have is to stay positive and aim high. Unless you already have a huge fan following, it does take a while to get your blog off the ground and running. It can be disappointing to log in and see very few views on your blog but if you keep positive about what you are doing, then you will get there. You also need to aim high and have the self belief that you can get there. I have lived my life, and am going to continue to do so, by believing that I can achieve anything that I set my mind to. Soon after I started my blog, I came across The Mighty and decided that I too wanted to have an article published on The Mighty. I am sure that they must get thousands of submissions a week but you have to aim high. I am very proud to say that I have two articles that have been accepted and published by The Mighty and I plan to submit quite a few more!

Above all you need to believe in yourself and not let anyone bring you down.

Now for the tricky part, I've yet to come across a blog that I haven't enjoyed reading and there are so many amazing bloggers out there that write with passion. But alas I have to chose 15, however I am a rule breaker from way back so instead I have chosen 20 amazing bloggers to pass the love onto.

Alison over at Instant Mum of Two
Toni over at For You Son
Nahdia over at Nadhz Adventures
Ruta over at My Story 4 his Glory
Kell over at All Mum Said
Natalie over at New Momma Survival

Darlene over at FamLee of Four
Chelsea over at 700 Smiles
Lauren over at The Playground Chronicles

I’m Rocking Motherhood – and spinning and flapping and bouncing…..

When I first became a mum in 2009 I was absolutely elated and terrified all at the same time. I was besotted by my little girl and vowed to do anything and everything to protect her and help her to grow. But I was terrified that I would stuff it all up. In the following few months after her birth I had quite a few doubts about my abilities and was subsequently diagnosed with Post Natal Depression. Being put onto medication helped me to realise that I was doing a fine job at the motherhood gig.

After just over 8 years of motherhood and two little superheroes later, I know that I am not perfect but I do try my hardest to be a good mum. I have my good days and also my not so good days but I am rocking motherhood to the best of my abilities! I still have moments where I doubt my abilities or second guess myself, don’t we all, but these days I try not to beat myself up about it.

I saw this rocking motherhood challenge a few months ago and thought that it was a brilliant idea. We, and I’m talking both mums and dads here, spend a lot of time beating ourselves up, that at times we fail to recognize all of the great things that we do as parents. It’s as if we take for granted how we are rocking this parenting gig. I am slowly learning to acknowledge all the great things that I do for my little superheroes and I am becoming better at accepting the recognition from others. But it has taken me a long time to get to this point.

Thank you Tina from over at No You Need to Calm Down for nominating me to complete the 10 Ways I’m Rocking Motherhood Challenge. By the way Tina I love your blog title, I’m sure that I have said that phrase numerous times over the last 8 years! When you’ve read my Challenge response, why don’t you head on over to Tina’s blog and read what she had to say about how she is rocking motherhood.

When I accepted the challenge to show the ways in which I am rocking motherhood, I then had to start thinking about 10 different ways in which I am rocking this gig. Mmmmm, not as easy as I thought.

I came up with a few ways but then came to a complete mind blank. So I did what Tina did – she pretended that somebody told her that she was a bad mum and you can imagine the response that that evoked. Well, I too would tell them “#@#* off” and remind them that they really should start sleeping with one eye open.

Then I came up with the rest of the ways that I rock motherhood!

I don't always put my little superheroes first.....

Now when you first read this you're probably thinking that that is really poor form on my behalf but it really isn't. I always ensure that my little superheroes are fed, clothed and looked after, their medical needs are always attended to and their schooling needs are always met but to do all of this I have to look after me first. This has literally taken me 8 years to fully understand the importance of. There are times when I need a break before I can attend to my little superheroes needs. At times I do need to walk away from situations and take some deep breaths before I go back in.

There are times when I do need to complete chores before I can help them out. And personally I think this is a good thing as my little superheroes are learning that they're not going to be waited on hand and foot. They're learning patience and sometimes, just sometimes, they start doing whatever they want done by themselves so they are also learning independence.

I can turn everyday run of the mill household chores into a therapy activity.....

Everything at superhero headquarters can be turned into a therapy activity at the drop of a hat. Helping to hang out the washing on the line helps develop their sensory proprioception awareness as they are carrying items of different weights. Using the pegs to hang out washing develops their fine motor control. Drying dishes in the kitchen helps with crossing their midline. Putting toys away is another activity that helps develop their proprioception awareness. If I can see a therapy opportunity, I will make the most of it!

I learn from my mistakes and own up when I make them....

I am not perfect, I do make mistakes and when I do I always own up to them. I think that it is good for my little superheroes to see that I do make mistakes, that I do forget things at times as they can then see that you don't have to be perfect. My little superheroes will learn that everyone makes mistakes. They see and hear me saying sorry and taking responsibility so that the next time that they make a mistake, they know that it is okay and that they should say sorry too. For me it is important to admit when I am wrong and to then try to do better. This is something that I want my little superheroes to understand.

I play hide and seek with my little superheroes......

And I join in on their water fights. We read books under the dining room table. We eat icy poles in winter. I dance in public with them, well I try to and usually get shot down! I wear the superhero shirts and outfits that they choose as presents for me. We bounce on the trampoline at 3am in the morning, although not sure how the neighbours feel about that! I join in on their games even when the games make no sense to me what so ever! It is these little indulgences that bring me most joy! I try to teach my little superheroes that they don't always need the television on. I want them to stretch their imagination and not always have to depend on an external source of entertainment. I want them to have fun!

I have taught my little superheroes all I know about manners......

Please, thank you, you're welcome, thank the chef, bless you and so on. Basic manners seem to be disappearing from society. I am determined that my little superheroes will know what manners are and be able to use them. Although when we're at home, you'd be wondering where my polite little superheroes have disappeared to as when we are in public they are both always being complimented on their manners.

I am letting my little superheroes learn the skills that they need to navigate through life......

At times it would be much easier to do things for my little superheroes, but they have to learn how to do things for themselves. Independence is a skill that does need to be practiced and I want my little superheroes to try things by themselves first before I step in. From doing household chores, to tying their shoelaces, to letting O do research on the computer and learning how to manage her anxiety and everything in between. I am always there to help them back up if they fall and to help them with a step if they are truly struggling but I do want them to pave their own way in this world. Doing it this way I am also enabling their confidence to grow!

And on the occasion that they whinge and whine at me and tell me that it isn't fair that I am "making" them do things, I politely tell them that no it isn't fair, it's actually raining outside! Seriously we do that in our place! I remind them that life isn't always fair, we do have to suck it up and get back on with life but at the same time I show them empathy and explain that I do understand why they are upset. Then I explain why I am asking them to try something first before asking for help and then the penny drops.....

I am patient, well most of the time......

What is the saying, that patience is a virtue? In an ASD house, patience really is a virtue. One of the crucial things that I learnt very early on in our autism journey was that patience is a must. Like when my little superheroes are tripping over their words or when L is changing his clothes for the 4th time on a Saturday morning or when we're trying to get L back to sleep at various times throughout the night. Becoming frustrated is a fruitless activity, all frustration does is make the situation worse and O or L will usually end up in a meltdown.

I am regularly told that I have the patience of saint but really I don't, you just don't see me grinding my teeth or biting my tongue so that I stay silent! And when I do find myself becoming impatient that is when I will walk away, breathe and count to 10!

I am my little superheroes advocate....

Being my little superheroes advocate is one thing that I am very proud of. Until my children find their own voices and become their own advocate, I am doing that for them - that is one of my roles as a parent. Every child deserves the best, every child deserves to have their health, well being and best interests to be taken care of. Raising children with special needs is complicated and you do have to take on the role of being an advocate as well as being a parent. Being an advocate does make the parenting gig a little harder but seeing my little superheroes progress makes it all worth while.

I have learnt when to push and when to let it slide.......

I really do pick my battles and on a daily basis.  Is that fact that L is dressed in a power ranger costume with his school uniform underneath really such a terrible thing? Nope, at least he has clothes on! If they want spaghetti or baked beans most nights for dinner, at least they are eating something. There are times when I do need to push them, like when O needs to do her homework or when L needs to brush his teeth, and I have no hesitation in pushing them to do these things. But if it isn't essential and by pushing my little superheroes means that a meltdown will occur, then we'll let it slide. That's not to say my little superheroes get their own way all the time, we just find different ways to approach the situation. We become creative!

I love my little superheroes unconditionally......

No matter where we are or what has just happened, my little superheroes know that they can always come for a hug and that I love them. Life with meltdowns can and is hard. At times my little superheroes say and do things that they aren't fully aware of and that they don't mean. They have said some very hurtful things. But at the end of the day I still love them and I will always love them. And I want my little superheroes to know that I do love them unconditionally, no matter what.

At the end of each and every day before I go to bed, I go and check on both my little superheroes, more so O as she does sleep in her own bed. I gaze at their peaceful faces and I kiss them goodnight. And then I think, yep I am doing a great job at this motherhood gig!

My hope in writing down my 10 ways in which I am rocking motherhood is that others will start thinking about and acknowledge the ways in which they also rock motherhood.

The following mums inspire me, I think they are rocking motherhood and I am hoping that they too will take up the challenge to list the 10 ways in which they rock! So the challenge is being passed to Breyona over at Savage Seven Blog, Trisha over at Plant Based Mummy, Whitney over at the Modern Chic Mom and Dre Deoshree over at Ethnically Mom.

I'd also love to hear about how you are rocking motherhood, or parenthood!
